Tachanun is a prayer of supplication and confession recited during Shacharit and Mincha. On certain special days, it is customary not to say Tachanun.

Days When Tachanun Is Omitted

  • Shabbat
  • All major holidays – Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, Simchat Torah, Passover, and Shavuot
  • Hanukkah – all eight days
  • Purim and Shushan Purim (15th of Adar)
  • Tu B'Shvat (15th of Shevat)
  • Lag B'Omer (33rd day of the Omer)
  • Rosh Chodesh (the new month)
  • Yom Yerushalayim (28th of Iyar)
  • Yom Ha'atzmaut – Israeli Independence Day (5th of Iyar)
  • A house with a Chatan (groom) – during the week of the wedding
  • A house with a Brit Milah – on the day of the circumcision
  • Erev Yom Kippur, Erev Passover, Erev Shavuot
